Interview with Op Massive Sponsored Athlete, Jay Alderton

When did you first get into bodybuilding? 

I have been training since I was a teenager, but have been Bodybuilding since Jan 2010


What are your short and long term fitness goals?  

My Short term goals this year are to maintain my Size while being as lean as possible and my long term goals are to win another British Title and hopefully Become Pro in the Next Couple of Years
 
What mistakes did you make when you first started weight training?  

I made many mistakes when starting out. When you are young all you care about is your T-shirt muscles so I used to train Biceps and Chest a lot! I also made a lot of mistakes with my diet also, eating the wrong foods and not giving my body the correct nutrients and sports supplements that use now.


How do you keep yourself motivated?  

I am a very self-motivated person. I believe that you need to make yourself plenty if goals whether it be a holiday, a competition or promotional show in order to keep on track with diet and fitness goals. For me it's organising plenty of photo shoots and taking part in competitions so I am in the best condition I can be in for my sponsors Grenade Thermo Detonator and Op Massive Supplements.

We are a group of guys and girls who are all fitness enthusiasts who have achieved and won great things over the years from Cover Model Competitions to British Natural Bodybuilding Contests, whenever we get together all be it a fitness expo, photo shoot or a new Team Grenade training video we always have a laugh and is always a great atmosphere when we are together! What made you develop such a passion for fitness?

I was a soldier in the British Army which is where I met Dale who is one of the owners of Op Massive Supplements. Fitness is a major part of being a soldier and having spent 7 years in the armed forces made me the disciplined hard working person I am today.


How long do you spend in the gym on average?

When I'm in full time training I usually spend a lot of time in the gym. I split my routines to cardio and abs before breakfast in the morning and do my weight sessions in the afternoon. I usually spend about an hour on each session that I do.


Whats a typical training routine for you?

My average training routine would usually be:

Morning Workout

12 min HIIT  (High Intensity Interval Training) on the treadmill, sprinting for 30 seconds and jogging for 1 minute

12 min Crossfit circuit (4 sets of 3 mins circuit usually consisting of box jumps, bag throws, skipping and steps)

200 reps of Abdominal Work

Afternoon Workout

Primary and secondary muscle groups,

5 exercises for each one doing 3 sets for each exercise

Day 1 Back and Bis
Day 2 Chest and Tris
Day 3 Shoulders, Traps, Hams and Calves
Day 4 Quads
Day 5 Rest


What is you diet plan when "Cutting" for shows and competitions?

I have experimented a lot with diets over the years but I'm a big fan of Ketogenic diets. The Ketogenic diet combined with taking Grenade Fat Burners have given me amazing results every time.


My diet that I was doing before the trip to Olypia was a 5 day cycle where days 1 - 4 I will be having only 40g of carbs and overloading on protein and fat and the 5th day I will consume 600 grams of high and low GI carbs. I will cycle this diet for a period of 6 weeks to get into peak condition.

How do you maintain having such a strict diet, do you get cravings for junk food like the rest of us?

Haha, yes of course, I get cravings for sweets and foods all the time! Especially Ice Cream and Doughnuts! What's great about the ketogenic diet is that if I really want these foods I can consume them on the 5th day. Its about having good self constraint and resisting the sugary temptations on a daily basis.

How do you get yourself through your brutal training sessions?

When I'm in the gym pushing out the last few reps I find it as hard as everyone else does, in true Army style I just grit my teeth and get through it, it's the last reps that make the difference between winning and losing and it's those final reps that count! I think about my goals in between sets and have always pushed myself to be the best I can be both physically and academically.

In your opinion what is the biggest factors effecting people trying to gaining lean muscle?

Nutrition and Sleep are definitely the biggest factor on muscle growth and recovery. Muscles don't grow in the gym like everyone thinks, muscle grows when not in the Gym so sleep and rest is the most vital thing when trying to achieve your Goals! Additionally without the correct nutrients going into your system your body will not be able to deal with the constant stress you put it through in the gym!
